Derby grew almost overnight. After McConnell Air Force Base opened between Wichita and Derby in 1952, the town went from about 400 residents to roughly 5,000 in six years. Many of those houses are still here, and plenty still sit on their original board-style roof decking under decades of shingle replacements. Today Derby is Wichita's largest suburb, with older streets and newer subdivisions side by side, so no two inspections here look the same.
Derby has two requirements that trip up out-of-town crews. If your house has slat (spaced-board) decking, the city requires approved solid sheathing to be installed when the new roof goes on. And the contractor has to email the city photos of the bare deck after tear-off and of the finished roof. We build both into every Derby job, and we price any sheathing up front so it isn't a surprise halfway through tear-off.
2026 has been an active year. Storm-report data shows 13 hail reports within 10 miles of Derby so far, including golf-ball-size hail (1.75 inches) on April 17 and half-dollar-size hail on August 7. April and May are historically the worst months. Hail damage is often invisible from the yard, so if a storm came through and nobody has looked at your roof, get it inspected before your insurer's claim deadline passes.

If the claim is approved, we handle tear-off, any required sheathing, underlayment, shingles, flashing and cleanup, then send the city the photos it needs. If insurance is paying, ask whether your policy includes code-upgrade (ordinance or law) coverage, which can pay for it.
