What to Photograph

You don't need to get on the roof. These ground-level shots tell us a lot:

• Gutters and downspouts. Dents in soft metal show how big the hail was.
• Roof vents and the AC unit. Dented vent caps and bent AC fins are classic hail signs.
• Shingle pieces or granules in the yard, driveway or at the bottom of downspouts.
• Your car, if it was parked outside during the storm.
• Hailstones next to a coin, if you caught any, so we can judge the size.

Before You Sign Anything

Never climb onto a wet or damaged roof. If a roofer knocks on your door, look them up in the Kansas Attorney General's roofing registration directory at ag.ks.gov first. If you sign a contract at your door, Kansas law gives you three days to cancel.
